Biosphere Tribute

CAUNCPEVBiosphere is the main recording name of Geir Jenssen (born 1962), a Norwegian musician who has released a notable catalogue of ambient music. He is well known for his early “ambient techno” aesthetic and later for his “arctic ambient” style, his use of music loops, and peculiar samples from sci-fi sources. His track “Novelty Waves” was used for the 1995 campaign of Levi’s. His 1997 album Substrata was voted by Hyperreal as one of the all time classic ambient albums. But over the last few years his albums (such as Cirque, Shenzou, Autour de la lune, Dropsonde and N-plants) have embodied some touches of jazz, classical, drone and even some dub-techno. His unique sound signature is quite special : an immense feeling of being absorbed in the cold winter. Suffice to say, in my opinion, Biosphere isn’t just making ambient music, his music IS pristine ambiance only equaled by Pete Namlook from to 1992 to 2012. The music that space colonies would probably play. The soundtrack for Insomnia is also present on this tribute mix, a movie that was later remade by Christopher Nolan. While listening to all of his records ( I buy every one since 1992) I had the feeling of being detached for an extended period of time. Geir Jenssen trancends any genres of music. He adopted Biosphere, as his alias in a nod to many of his compositions having been assimilated into an ‘Arctic Sound’ a somewhat reductive term concerning his work since it is much more than a simple reflection of his environment-he proposes. Animated by attention to detail, rich textures, a natural minimalist aesthetic-aquatic brushstrokes, echoes of distant vessels, and glacial glitches-and other frequency maneuvers, he composes a ‘cinema for the ears’ that irremediably positions the listener in a profound and pensive sonic dimension. His music  echoes impressions and slides, and eschews any pretences of rigid formalism or the dichotomy often found between sound and image. His digital manipulations of natural images or extreme situations from everyday life enhance perception, while constituting a genuine invitation to  an escape toward infinite horizons. A dual display as  unreal and poetic.

In love with a soundtrack, the movie, or both ?

As I watch tons of movies, sometimes under a huge stockpile of DVD hides a hidden gem…Such was the case for Drive, which was praised by the legendary Robert Ebert and had a standing ovation at Cannes festival in 2011. So what the fuss is all about ? Drive is a neo noir crime thriller film directed by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston (Breaking bad) and Albert Brooks. Although Drive shares several characteristics with the similarly-named 1978 Walter Hill car-chase film, The Driver, it is actually adapted from the 2005 James Sallis novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Hossein Amini. But above all I fell for its 80’s antics and especially its new wave ish synth-pop soundtrack by Cliff Martinez, as I’ve rarely felt compelled to download and buy a soundtrack on I:Tunes plus its vinyl afterwards. The tittle track, entitled Nightcall by Kavinsky is produced by one of Daft punk and shares some of the magic of their early french touch work in the 90’s. Nightcall”was produced by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo and features Brazilian lead singer of CSS, Lovefoxxx. The track was used in the title sequence for Drive.  Most of its ethereal electronic-pop score was composed by Cliff Martinez, who was a drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Refn was a particular fan of his ambient work on the Sex, Lies, and Videotape soundtrack. The score contains tracks with vintage keyboards and bluntly descriptive titles. Refn wanted electronic music for the film and to have the music occasionally be abstract so viewers can see things from The Driver’s perspective.He gave composer Martinez a sampling of songs he liked and asked Martinez to emulate the sound, resulting in “a kind of retro, 80ish synth-pop” result. A real dream like movie and soundtrack as well. Be sure to check this out and the movie as well !
