The first of two mixes created for Pete Tong’s Essential Mix. Transmitted on Radio 1 FM. Created by The Future Sound of London. Made at Earthbeat Studios in London 1993. Engineered by Yage. A tracklist released at the time credited the FSOL samples between tracks – many of which ended up on Lifeforms – as simply ‘Amorphous Androgynous – Environment’. Here only the known titled tracks are featured. The tracklist also credited a place for ‘Hymn To Us’ by TransGlobal Underground, which is not present on the transmission (but explains the currently unknown track at 22 minutes). Further on in the tracklist, other missing pieces, The Cauldron by Third Ear Band and Circles by KPM Foundation are also given in that released tracklist.

5) N.O.W. – Boiler room London set.

This gem of a mix exudes a soulful, graceful ambience from the get go. While the selections are generally older picks (from disco to funk to hip-hop to Motown and back again) everything is intelligently remodelled with a confident, futuristic ambition. Nightmares on Wax performs dreamlike transitions to build a solid, suave groove, and then the tunes begin to jump out. It’s game over by the time he unleashes the Diana Ross classic ‘It’s My House’. If you still need convincing, it also features a delicious reworking of Janet Jackson’s ‘If’ that sounds like Jessy Lanza covering Prince.

Chain reaction, an iconic dub techno label

April 13, 2018 Leave a comment

Life films us exactly. Our experience of it, though, lies beyond images and descriptions. Emotions, coming in irrational flashes, are non-figurable. We lose our little connection to them very quickly. We look for forms with this in mind : so they can take us to meet the subconscious. Chain reaction was a sublabel of Basic Channel founded in 1995. Peter Kuschnereit aka Substance, René Löwe aka Vainqueur, Torsten Pröfrock aka Various artists and Resilent, Andy Mellwig, Thomas Köner aka Porter Ricks, Gerhard Behles, Robert Henke, Torsten Pröfrock aka Monolake formed some of the artists of the now defunkt label.

Chain reactions is a mix tribute to the label / 1995-2003, it is influenced by glitch techno, dub and ambient. Sounds of CR are captured within tiny fragments of time and then within one’s mindspace. I think it’s important to play this mix on a decent system so you can really hear and feel the interactions between the delays, the warm basslines and the soundscapes that surrounds them.

Oceania mix : ambient waves

November 2, 2017 Leave a comment

Ocean waves, tranquility and ambient. Seems a fitting match. Being in a meditative state of mind, attempting to clear out all thoughts and rid myself of negative energy, I put together a mix to compliment my meditation. As the water sways in waves, so does my breath, and so does everything else. In moment of eternal bliss, we long for calm and no place is calmer than the ocean. This ambient mix with a touch of dub is meant to relax your mind and take the stress away.

With Pete Namlook, Loscil, Mixmaster Morris, The Black Dog, Melotone, Rod Modell, Evan Marc, Steve Hillage, Ishq, Biosphere, The KLF, Cio D’Or & Krill Minima.
