Blue rooms (The Orb megamixes) : part 001

Whenever I think about the Orb, I go back to 1991, when Little fluffy clouds was released and when I heard it, I knew I would become an electronic music buff. Afterwards, I got into pirate radio stations that would broadcast techno from the early Tresor compilations and early trance on Eye Q records, but I was mostly an ambient-techno head (And IDM) and drawn towards the experimental side of electronic music. I had already taken a keen interest into the works of Kraftwerk, Tangerine dream and Vangelis but to me, The Orb and ambient was rather more radical but also enjoyable and above all, incredibly fun to listen to; it had a playful vibe that was and still is sorely lacking in music nowadays. It’s with the release of U.F.O.R.B. and the live CD (1993) that I became mesmerized by the band.

Thereby, I began collecting all the CD singles I could possibly get my hands on. From 1991 to 1994, a CD single could fetch around 30 $ or even more if it was imported. I bought FFWD (Fripp Fehlman Weston Dr Alex Patterson) for nearly 60 $ in 1994 ! (About about $112.88 today in adjusted dollars)… It was tedious back then to collect music. There was no Internet and we had to read interviews in magazines like Musik or Mixmag to gather input on the scene. But it gave me and others a keen and genuine interest in quality electronic music, and from then on, I picked on other scenes as well, but my first love was and still is home listening electronic music and labels like Rising high, GPR, R&S and of course Warp records / Skam.

In 2010, I made a 3 h 13 minute mix on The Orb to commemorate their 20 th year, the mix was taken down by Soundcloud on the request of an ex band member, but I was glad to meet other fans of the band and keep on collecting even more Orb rarities such as : edits from Soundcloud from DJ’s and producers, remixes I had never heard before by The Orb, covers, live versions by the band itself, tracks & snippets Orb had sampled, obscure collabs with M.B.M. and Lee Scratch Perry (RIP), as well as funny & playful stuff The Orb had sampled from radio stations (check out Big tits in America with Sex pistols!). It’s with great pleasure I thereby made this mix in a one live cut which lasted over 9 h 00 !!!! (on my radio show) ; I then edited it and trimmed it from 6 h 00 to around 5 h 00, and split it into two segments !

Part 002 will follow soon!

I’m enjoying your mixes – and through the RSS feed see there are some mixes that have since been taken down (Kraftwerk covers, Orb samples). Is there any chance to still obtain/listen to those? Thanks!
